What is Labiaplasty Surgery?
Labiaplasty is surgery to reduce or reshape the labia minora, the inner folds of skin around the vaginal opening.
People consider it for different reasons, including rubbing or discomfort during exercise, clothing or intimacy, or concerns about appearance. Labia vary widely in size, shape and symmetry.
Surgery is a personal choice, and a consultation gives you time to discuss your concerns and whether an operation is appropriate for you.

Plastic Surgeon vs Cosmetic Surgeon
Dr Rughani is a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with FRACS (Plastic Surgery) and FRCS (Plastic Surgery) qualifications.
Plastic surgery is a recognised medical specialty with formal training and specialist registration.
“Cosmetic surgeon” describes an area of practice and is not a separate specialist qualification. You can check a practitioner’s registration on the AHPRA public register.

Dr Rughani performs surgery in accredited hospitals. Labiaplasty is generally performed as day surgery. This means you come to hospital for the procedure and, once the clinical team confirms it is safe, go home the same day with a responsible adult.
A general anaesthetic is offered for your safety and comfort, and he also uses long-acting local anaesthetic to assist with pain control after the operation.
During surgery, the planned tissue is reshaped and the wound is closed with carefully placed absorbable sutures, which usually do not need routine removal.
Before discharge, you will receive wound-care instructions, any selected topical creams, pain relief and antibiotics as prescribed, and a detailed postoperative recovery guide.

Swelling, bruising, tenderness and light spotting can occur in the early days.
Plan to rest for the first 48 hours, with gentle walking as advised. Keep the area clean according to your discharge instructions and wear loose clothing to reduce friction.
Many people need around one to two weeks away from work, depending on their duties and comfort.
Avoid strenuous exercise, cycling and activities that put pressure on the area for approximately four to six weeks. Dr Rughani’s advises avoiding intercourse for at least six weeks and waiting for clearance before resuming it or using tampons. Swelling and scar changes can continue for several months.
Your individual instructions and follow-up advice take priority over general timeframes.

All surgery carries risk. Labiaplasty risks include bleeding or a collection of blood, infection, pain, swelling, bruising, delayed healing or wound separation, scarring, asymmetry and changes in sensation.
Persistent sensitivity or discomfort, pain with intercourse, dissatisfaction with the appearance, or a need for further surgery are possible.
Anaesthetic and medication reactions, blood clots and tissue injury are less common but important risks.

Please complete these steps so your appointment can proceed:
- Obtain a GP referral addressed to Dr Milap Rughani that briefly describes the treatment you are seeking, such as labiaplasty. Please send it to the practice before your appointment. A GP referral is generally valid for 12 months from your first specialist consultation.
- Complete the pre-consultation questionnaire. Patients considering cosmetic surgery must complete a screening questionnaire, including an assessment for body dysmorphic disorder. Our team will provide the secure link before your appointment.
If either requirement is incomplete, your consultation may need to be rescheduled.
The initial consultation fee is $300. Following your assessment, you will receive a personalised, itemised quote for surgery. The surgeon’s fee and its inclusions will be explained before you decide whether to proceed. The planned care includes:
- Your labiaplasty operation with Dr Rughani
- Two preoperative consultations with Dr Rughani for cosmetic surgery, with no additional fee for the second consultation
- Nurse reviews at approximately one and two weeks after surgery
- Reviews with Dr Rughani at approximately six and twelve weeks
- Further review for up to one year when clinically needed
Your quote will explain how the initial consultation fee is accounted for and identify other costs, including hospital and anaesthetist fees. Medicare or private health insurance benefits depend on individual eligibility; purely cosmetic surgery generally does not attract a Medicare benefit.
For cosmetic surgery, a minimum seven-day cooling-off period applies after your two consultations and signed informed consent, before surgery can proceed. You may arrange your second consultation in advance by calling our rooms. Surgery dates cannot be pre-booked before your initial consultation with Dr Rughani.
No. Dr Rughani needs to assess you and discuss an individual plan before a surgery date can be arranged.
Dr Rughani uses absorbable sutures. Your nurse or surgeon will check healing at your follow-up appointments.
This depends on your job and recovery. Some people return to desk work after 1to 2 weeks; physically demanding work may require longer, up to 4 to 6 weeks.
