Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) Surgery Brisbane & North Lakes

Patient information | Dr Rughani, Specialist Plastic Surgeon

What is a Brachioplasty?

Brachioplasty, also known as arm lift surgery, removes excess skin and, where appropriate, fat from the upper arms.

People may consider surgery after significant weight loss or when loose skin causes rubbing, discomfort or difficulty with clothing. Exercise can strengthen the arm muscles, but it cannot remove excess skin.

A consultation helps determine whether surgery is suitable for your health, anatomy and goals.

What does brachioplasty surgery involve?

The operation involves removing excess upper-arm skin and carefully closing the remaining tissue. Liposuction may also be used to reduce localised fat.

The amount and distribution of loose skin determine the incision required. A fuller arm lift usually leaves a permanent scar extending from the armpit towards the elbow. If excess skin extends onto the side of the chest, a longer incision may be needed.

Dr Rughani will explain the proposed approach, likely scar position and limitations before you decide whether to proceed.

What happens at your consultation?

Considering arm lift surgery can feel like a significant decision, particularly after the effort involved in losing weight or when loose skin affects your daily comfort.

Your consultation is a private, respectful opportunity to discuss your concerns. Dr Rughani will listen to what matters to you, review your medical history and ask how the excess skin affects everyday activities.

With your consent, he will examine your arms and discuss the balance between removing loose skin and accepting permanent scars. He will explain the possible benefits, alternatives, recovery and risks, with time for your questions.

There is no pressure to proceed. You are welcome to take the time you need to decide whether surgery is right for you.

Plastic Surgeon vs Cosmetic Surgeon

Dr Rughani is a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with FRACS (Plastic Surgery) and FRCS (Plastic Surgery) qualifications.

Plastic surgery is a recognised medical specialty with formal training and specialist registration.

“Cosmetic surgeon” describes an area of practice and is not a separate specialist qualification. You can check a practitioner’s registration on the AHPRA public register.

Recovery

Surgery

Surgery

Soreness, bruising, swelling and tightness are expected during early recovery. Arm movement may feel restricted, and you may need help with dressing, household tasks and caring for children.

Dr Rughani’s team will provide written instructions about wound care, medication, compression garments, activity and follow-up.

In the first 2 weeks:

Arrange help at home and rest.

Support arms on pillows as advised

Avoid lifting, overhead reaching and stretching that pulls on the wounds.

Weeks 3–6

Gradually increase light daily activities as healing allows

Wear your compression garment

Begin scar treatment only once the wounds have healed and the team advises it is appropriate.

Week 6 onwards

Return to exercise gradually after clearance from Dr Rughani.

Upper-body training and heavier lifting may require longer.

risks

All surgery and anaesthesia carry risks. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, delayed wound healing, wound separation, altered sensation and prominent or uncomfortable scars.

There may also be asymmetry, contour irregularities, persistent swelling or tightness affecting movement. Further treatment or surgery may be necessary.

Less common but serious complications include tissue loss, blood clots and anaesthetic complications.

Dr Rughani will discuss your individual risks and the limitations of surgery. Results cannot be guaranteed.

Brachioplasty is not a weight-loss treatment. Scars are permanent, and outcomes vary between individuals.

Dr Rughani will explain your individual risks and alternatives. Outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please complete these steps so your appointment can proceed:

  1. Obtain a GP referral addressed to Dr Milap Rughani that briefly describes the treatment you are seeking, such as Brachioplasty / Arm Lift. Please send it to the practice before your appointment. A GP referral is generally valid for 12 months from your first specialist consultation.
  2. Complete the pre-consultation questionnaire. Patients considering cosmetic surgery must complete a screening questionnaire, including an assessment for body dysmorphic disorder. Our team will provide the secure link before your appointment.

If either requirement is incomplete, your consultation may need to be rescheduled.

An assessment may be appropriate if you have excess upper-arm skin following weight loss or changes over time.

Suitability depends on your health, weight stability, healing risks and expectations.

Being comfortable with the likelihood of long, visible scars is an important part of the decision.

Exercise can improve muscle strength, but it does not remove excess skin.

Liposuction treats fat rather than loose skin. It may be suitable when skin elasticity is good, or used alongside brachioplasty.

Dr Rughani will explain which options may address your concerns.

Scars usually run along the inner or underside of the upper arm, from the armpit towards the elbow. Their length depends on how much skin needs to be removed.

Scars may remain noticeable even after they mature. The proposed position and extent will be discussed at your consultation.

A compression garment is commonly used to support the arms and help manage swelling. Your recovery guide recommends wearing it as directed, often for four to six weeks.

The team will explain the appropriate fit, wear schedule and care instructions.

Dr Rughani generally does not use drains for Brachioplasty.

However drains may be used temporarily in selected cases. If needed, you will receive instructions about caring for them. Removal depends on fluid output and your clinical assessment.

Dr Rughani’s surgeon fee ranges and increases with complexity. The surgeon fee includes the agreed operation, two preoperative consultations, postoperative inpatient reviews, planned nurse reviews at approximately weeks one and two, planned Dr Rughani reviews at weeks six and twelve, and review for up to one year when clinically needed

A written, itemised estimate is provided after assessment.

Hospital and theatre charges, the anaesthetist’s fee, and care outside the agreed plan are quoted separately.

This depends on your healing and how much your work involves using your arms.

Allow time away from work during early recovery.

Physical roles involving lifting, pushing, pulling or overhead reaching usually require longer than desk-based work. Discuss your duties with Dr Rughani before arranging leave.

Do not drive while taking sedating pain medication or while arm movement is restricted.

You should be able to steer, use the controls and perform an emergency manoeuvre comfortably and safely.

Follow your surgical team’s advice and check any insurer requirements.
