Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)
Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue and skin, reshapes the breasts and repositions the nipples. It aims to reduce breast weight and may help relieve associated discomfort.
Who is suitable for Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction may be considered if heavy breasts contribute to neck, back or shoulder pain, skin irritation, bra-strap indentations or difficulty exercising. Suitability depends on your health, breast development and expectations. Future pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight changes should also be considered.
You must avoid smoking and vaping before surgery and during recovery.
Your Consultation
Discussing breast concerns can feel personal. Dr Milap Rughani will listen to what matters to you, assess your symptoms and explain your options with care.
With your consent, he will examine your breasts and discuss the proposed size, surgical technique, scars and possible outcomes. Your medical history, medicines and future pregnancy plans help guide an individual approach. You will have time to ask questions and consider your decision without pressure.
Before surgery, a nurse review helps review your preparation, medicines, support bra and recovery arrangements.
Dr Rughani is a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with FRACS (Plastic Surgery) and FRCS (Plastic Surgery) qualifications.
Plastic surgery is a recognised medical specialty with formal training and specialist registration.
“Cosmetic surgeon” describes an area of practice and is not a separate specialist qualification. You can check a practitioner’s registration on the AHPRA public register.
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia in accredited hospitals.
Dr Rughani removes excess breast tissue and skin, reshapes the remaining tissue and repositions the nipples.
The technique depends on your anatomy and the amount of reduction required.
Scars usually run around the areola and down to the breast crease, often with a horizontal scar along the crease.
Dressings and a supportive surgical bra are applied.
Depending on your procedure and health, you may go home the same day or stay overnight.
Swelling, bruising, tenderness and tiredness are expected initially. Breast or nipple sensation may also change.
Pain relief and antibiotics are provided as prescribed, with a nurse review at approximately one week and subsequent follow-up with Dr Rughani.
Arrange help at home, take short regular walks and wear your supportive non-wired bra as instructed.
Many patients need 2–3 weeks away from desk work; physically demanding work may require longer.
Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are generally restricted for around six weeks, with a gradual return after clearance.
Breast shape settles over several months, while scars continue to soften over 12–18 months.
Recovery varies between individuals.
All surgery and anaesthesia carry risks. Risks include bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, scarring, asymmetry, altered nipple sensation and reduced ability to breastfeed.
Loss of nipple or skin tissue, anaesthetic complications and blood clots can occur. Further surgery may be needed.
Dr Rughani will explain your individual risks and alternatives. Outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
The initial consultation fee is $300. Following your assessment, you will receive a personalised, itemised quote for surgery.
The surgeon’s fee and its inclusions will be explained before you decide whether to proceed. The planned care includes:
Your quote will explain how the initial consultation fee is accounted for and identify other costs, including hospital and anaesthetist fees. Medicare or private health insurance benefits depend on individual eligibility; purely cosmetic surgery generally does not attract a Medicare benefit.
For cosmetic surgery, a minimum seven-day cooling-off period applies after your two consultations and signed informed consent, before surgery can proceed. You may arrange your second consultation in advance by calling our rooms. Surgery dates cannot be pre-booked before your initial consultation with Dr Rughani.
Benefits may apply when eligibility criteria are met. Our team can help you understand your quote and what to confirm with your insurer.
Please complete these steps so your appointment can proceed:
If either requirement is incomplete, your consultation may need to be rescheduled.
Your preferred size will guide the discussion, but a specific cup size or perfect symmetry cannot be guaranteed.
Drains may be used temporarily to remove fluid from beneath the skin. Whether they are needed, and when they are removed, depends on your operation and recovery. You will receive care instructions if drains are used.
