What is a back bra lift?
A back bra lift removes excess skin and associated soft tissue from the upper and middle back. It may be considered after weight loss, or when changes in skin elasticity leave persistent folds of loose skin.
These folds can contribute to rubbing, skin irritation, difficulty maintaining hygiene or discomfort when wearing clothing. Exercise can support health and weight management, however does not reliably remove established excess skin.
Where appropriate, liposuction may be used alongside skin removal to address underlying fat. The procedure leaves a permanent horizontal scar across the back, usually planned near the bra line. Depending on the distribution of excess skin, the incision may extend towards the sides of the chest. Concealment beneath clothing or a bra cannot be guaranteed.
A back bra lift is not a weight-loss treatment. “Upper body lift” sometimes describes a broader combination of procedures; Dr Rughani will explain the exact operation proposed for you.
Who may be suitable?
An assessment may be appropriate if you:
What happens at your consultation?
Your consultation is a private, respectful conversation about your concerns, how they affect daily life and what you hope surgery might address. Dr Rughani will review your weight history, medical conditions, previous operations, medications and smoking or vaping history. With your consent, he will examine your back and any associated excess skin around the sides of your chest.Together, you will discuss:
There is no pressure to proceed. Take the time you need to consider your options and ask questions.
Dr Rughani is a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with FRACS (Plastic Surgery) and FRCS (Plastic Surgery) qualifications.
Plastic surgery is a recognised medical specialty with formal training and specialist registration.
“Cosmetic surgeon” describes an area of practice and is not a separate specialist qualification. You can check a practitioner’s registration on the AHPRA public register.
A back bra lift is generally performed under general anaesthesia in hospital.
Before surgery, Dr Rughani will mark the planned area of skin removal and discuss the incision with you.
Excess skin and associated tissue are removed, and the remaining skin is repositioned and closed in layers. Liposuction may be included where appropriate.
Absorbable sutures may be used. Temporary drains may also be placed to collect fluid while the tissues begin to heal.
Operating time and the length of hospital stay depend on the extent of surgery, your health and whether other procedures are performed.
Your proposed admission and discharge arrangements will be explained beforehand.
Tightness, soreness, bruising, swelling and altered sensation are expected during early recovery.
Dr Rughani will provide individual instructions for dressings, medication, drains, clothing or garments, activity and follow-up.
Arrange help with transport, household tasks and caring responsibilities. Heavy lifting, forceful twisting and movements that stretch the incision should be avoided.
If drains are used, removal depends on their output and your healing rather than a fixed date.
Activity increases gradually as healing progresses.
Avoid strenuous exercise and upper-body loading until cleared.
Driving should resume only when you can safely control the vehicle and are no longer taking medication that impairs alertness.
Once the wound has fully healed, the team may recommend silicone products or other scar care.
Swelling and sensation may continue to change over several months.
Scars are permanent and can take 12–18 months or longer to mature.
All surgery and anaesthesia carry risks. Possible complications include:
Bleeding or a collection of blood requiring treatment, Infection, Fluid collections, called seromas, which may require drainage, Delayed healing, wound separation or loss of skin or fatty tissue, Persistent pain, numbness or altered sensation, Asymmetry, contour irregularities or residual skin folds, Wide, raised, prominent or uncomfortable scars, Blood clots in the legs or lungs,
Anaesthetic complications.
Further treatment or revision surgery.
Results cannot be guaranteed. Weight changes and ageing can alter the back after surgery.
Dr Rughani will discuss your individual risks and the likely limits of treatment before you decide.

The outcomes shown are specific to those patients and may not reflect the results experienced by others, as individual outcomes can vary due to a range of factors.
Please complete these steps so your appointment can proceed:
If either requirement is incomplete, your consultation may need to be rescheduled.
The operation leaves a permanent horizontal scar across the back, usually planned near the bra line. It may extend towards the sides of the chest depending on the excess skin. Scar position and length will be discussed during consultation. A bra or clothing may cover the scar, but concealment cannot be guaranteed.
Yes. Although the name refers to the bra line, the procedure can also be considered for men with excess upper or middle back skin. Incision placement is tailored to individual anatomy.
If you are planning substantial further weight loss, it may be appropriate to postpone surgery. Maintaining a stable weight helps with surgical planning, while later weight changes can affect the outcome. Dr Rughani will discuss your weight history, nutritional health and timing.
Following your assessment, Rughani Plastic Surgery will provide a personalised quote based on the proposed procedure. Ask the team to explain the surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist and hospital charges, and any additional costs or follow-up inclusions before deciding.
